A guide to Vilamoura

The Algarve is home to many fantastic holiday destinations and Vilamoura is one of the most sophisticated and stylish. There are many reasons to choose this as the base for your summer break – we’re going to run through some of the best. But first, we’ll take a brief look at Vilamoura’s history.

Unlike some of the Algarve’s other resorts that developed around traditional fishing villages, Vilamoura came into existence in the 1970s after a purpose-built marina was constructed in the area. A wealthy Portuguese banker was behind the development and Vilamoura quickly became a hotspot for chic villas and top-quality hotels.

Indeed, as you wander around the marina you’ll notice that all of the properties within close proximity are what you’d describe as high-end. Over the years, Vilamoura has grown but it has always stayed true to its luxury roots, making this a brilliant spot for an opulent getaway.

However, despite the quality of the accommodation on offer, it is still very affordable, so you don’t need thousands in the bank to enjoy this millionaire’s playground.

Vilamoura’s beaches

Most people travel to the Algarve to take advantage of the stunning coastline and Vilamoura certainly doesn’t fall short in this department. The beaches closest to the town – Praia da Marina and Praia de Quarteira – comprise gorgeous golden sand and are home to a host of amenities, from cafes and restaurants to bars and water sports centres.

If you’re looking for something a little quieter you don’t have to travel too far. Praia da Falesia is located between Vilamoura and Albufeira and is backed by towering cliffs. Access is via a set of steps that runs down to the sand – which spans 6 km – so there is plenty of space and fewer crowds than at some of the area’s other beaches.

Vilamoura’s golf courses

You can’t mention Vilamoura and not talk about golf. The Algarve is well known for being one of the top places in Europe to tee off and Vilamoura boasts some of the region’s most prestigious courses. At the top of the list is the Old Course, which was designed by Frank Pennink and is the second-oldest course in the Algarve. While the first holes are relatively comfortable for seasoned golfers, the latter stages are definitely challenging.

The Millennium Course, which opened in 2000 (hence its name), is another highlight for golfers, with this par 72, 18-hole course a real joy to play on. The Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course, meanwhile, is another option. It was designed by Donald Steel and features a mixture of difficult shots and easier putts to ensure a varied and exciting round.

Vilamoura’s nightlife

Much of Vilamoura’s nightlife is concentrated around the marina, with the chicest bars and clubs located close to the waterfront and within sight of the many yachts that berth here over the summer.

However, the jewel in Vilamoura’s crown is its casino, which is located close to the beach and many of the top hotels. For a glamorous and exciting night out, this is the place to come to. You can have a flutter on its roulette wheels, try your luck at the blackjack or poker tables or just play the slot machines – it’s up to you.
